Fresh Summer Cocktail Trends

As the dog days of summer descend upon us, cool off with a fresh take on your cocktail game. Make the most of it by bringing the best and brightest this season has to offer beyond the table and behind the bar.

Pass the Herb

The marriage of spirits and fresh herbs dates back to cocktail culture’s earliest days. The trend has endured the ages, and with good reason. Whether it’s a twist on a classic Mint Julep or something new, this is a love that lasts.

Try: “Pink Gin Tonic Draft” at Alewife — Hendrick’s Gin / Cocchi Rosa / Blanc Vermouth, house tonic / lime acid / mint / pink peppercorn / rose water

Drink Your Veggies

No longer relegated to perfunctory bloody mary garnishes, vegetables now have a starring role in cocktails. From housemade shrubs to cucumber Tom Collins, a little shot of green brings earthiness, both in flavor and presentation, to the glass.

Try: “With Envy” at Shagbark —  A. Smith Bowman ‘Sunset Hills’ Gin / Vitae Anisette / Chartreuse / local greens / lime

Puttin’ on the Spritz

The Aperol spritz made its comeback last summer and this year we’re seeing the spritz trend take on new life with cocktails featuring various apéritifs and digestifs paired with citrus and berries. The spritz also makes for an ideal non-alcoholic offering on bar menus for those looking to taper their tipples.

Try: “Takes Two to Mango” at Saison — Lemon / Mango / Stappi / Orange Flower Water / Soda
