Spotlight on Kardinal Hall

Owner Josh Hunt

At Kardinal Hall, brothers Josh Hunt and John Woodriff have captured the essence of a traditional beer garden right in Midtown Charlottesville, and we are here for it.

Located in an almost century-old historic art-deco Coca-Cola building, the space brings the Alpine spirit with Bavarian pretzels, schnitzel sammies, charcuterie board and beer, wine and cider that span the globe.

Kardinal Hall is spacious, both inside and outside — an ideal escape for these socially distant times. P.S.: Dog-lovers, your furry friends are welcome.

For beer-drinkers seeking more intriguing, perhaps lesser-found brews, Kardinal Hall is a go-to. Home to almost 30 taps — ranging from Belgian ales to barrel-aged sours— and a hefty collection of bottles, the hardest part is making a decision. If you’re looking for something closer to home, Kardinal Hall also has selections from local area beverage makers, like Potter’s Cider and Starr Hill Brewery, along with those across the commonwealth.

The kitchen draws on flavors from across the pond, while also paying homage to area purveyors like Wayside Farms and Marie Bette Bakery.

One of our favorite parts: An entire section devoted to Belgian Fries — perfect for soaking up all the suds — with a collection of housemade dipping sauces Beers and brats are a dynamic duo so be sure to check out their “house-cranked” sausages made with Madison County’s Papa Weaver’s Pork.

Added bonuses: bocce ball court, a dedicated kids menu, boozy cocktails and Sunday brunch. Kardinal Hall is currently offering indoor and outdoor dining, or diners can head online to order curbside takeout.
